Phuket Presents “Regenerative Blueprint” at 27th ITOP Forum, Advancing Sustainable Island Tourism and Showcasing Thai Cultural Heritage in the Republic of Korea

Phuket Province is strengthening international cooperation in sustainable tourism development through its participation in the 27th International Island Tourism Organization (ITOP) Forum 2026, held at Jeju Stone Park, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Republic of Korea, from 28 to 30 October 2026.

On 28 October 2026, at 3:00 p.m. Korea Standard Time (1:00 p.m. Thailand time), Mr. Chodnarin Koedsom, Governor of Phuket Province, participated in the ITOP Leaders Roundtable, where Phuket presented its vision, “Phuket: Leaping Forward for Global Island Tourism,” under the concept of “Regenerative Blueprint.”

The vision aims to position Phuket as a world-class island destination by promoting balanced and sustainable growth through three key priorities: infrastructure and public utilities development, human capital and community empowerment, and the advancement of Phuket as a global wellness destination. This approach seeks to ensure that tourism growth delivers economic benefits while protecting natural resources and enhancing the quality of life of local residents.

In terms of urban development, Phuket is committed to improving transportation systems, water and energy management, waste management, and coastal protection to accommodate tourism growth while minimizing environmental impacts. The province also places strong emphasis on strengthening the capabilities of local tourism personnel through language development, digital skills training, and environmentally responsible service practices.

At the community level, Phuket continues to promote community-based tourism to distribute tourism revenue more widely among local businesses and encourage residents to take an active role in the province’s tourism development.

Building on its strengths in healthcare and wellness tourism, Phuket also aims to integrate medical services, traditional spa practices, cultural heritage, and natural resources to establish itself as an internationally recognized wellness destination. This approach is designed to attract quality-conscious visitors, deliver meaningful travel experiences, and generate greater long-term economic value for the province.

Another highlight of Phuket’s participation in the international forum was a Khon performance by a troupe of five-year-old children from Phuket Municipality Kindergarten School. Khon, Thailand’s traditional masked dance-drama, is regarded as one of the country’s most sophisticated performing arts. Through their performance, the young performers showcased the richness of Thai cultural heritage and highlighted the importance of passing this treasured art form on to younger generations, bringing Thai culture to the international stage.

Furthermore, Phuket proposed the establishment of an ITOP Inter-Island Working Group on Infrastructure and Wellness to facilitate knowledge-sharing and cooperation among member island destinations. The proposed working group would serve as a platform for exchanging expertise in talent development, green technology, and wellness tourism standards, strengthening international cooperation and supporting practical, sustainable development across island destinations.

Another highlight of Phuket’s participation in the international forum was a Khon performance by Kindergarten 3 students from Phuket Municipality Kindergarten School. Through this traditional Thai masked dance drama, the young performers showcased the richness of Thailand’s cultural heritage to an international audience.

Prior to the performance, Mr. Chodnarin Koedsom, Governor of Phuket Province, offered words of encouragement and support to the children, helping build their confidence as they represented Phuket and presented Thai performing arts on the international stage.

Phuket’s participation in the 27th ITOP Forum reflects the province’s continued commitment to shaping a sustainable future for island tourism. Guided by the “Regenerative Blueprint” concept, Phuket aims to advance its infrastructure, empower local communities, and strengthen its position as a global wellness destination. Through these efforts, the province aspires to become a world-class island destination that creates lasting value for visitors, local communities, and future generations.
